These days everybody is concerned about how clean cars are once they’re on the road, but what about the manufacturing process? In an effort to make its cars as clean as possible Ford has decided that it will build a small power plant next to the company’s Michigan assembly plant. Once the plant is completed it is estimated to save the company $160,000 in electricity.
The small power plant will use solar panels to provide energy to their assembly plant. Although the total cost of the plant will be about $5.8 billion, the Ford Motor Company will actually only be paying about $800,000. The rest will be paid for by the Michigan Public Service Commission and Detroit Edison. Detroit Edison has been funding a program which encourages customers to support green power.
This is a great effort by Ford to improve its image and actually save a lot of money at the same time. If Ford does something like this for all of its plants then the savings will be huge and it will help reduce the need for dirty energy. If Ford decides to build its electric vehicles at a plant that is powered by solar panels than it can brag about a cleaner car with a cleaner manufacturing process.
